How fast is Gigabit internet?+
When you see an internet speed such as gigabit this means that 1 billion bits of data are being transferred from one machine to another in a single second. Gigabit internet may also be referred to as 1 gigabit per second (Gbps), 1000 Mbps, 1G, 1 GiG, or 1 Gbps.
How does Gigabit internet work?+
Computers work using units of data called bits or binary digits. Computers can process multiple bits of information at a time. A common rate at which computers can transfer or process information is called megabits per second or mbps. Say, for example, you wanted to stream a 2 hr HD film. The typical movie file size is 2 gigabits of data and if you had a 50 Mbps Internet connect, you could download that movie in 40 minutes. In contrast, a gigabit internet connection, or 1000 megabits, could download the same file size within 2-3 minutes. Therefore, the faster your Internet connection, the faster you can download information to the device or machine you are using.
Do I need Gigabit internet?+
Today the average consumer has multiple devices tied to one internet connection in his/her home. These devices can be TVs, laptops, smartphones, tablets, printers, home security systems or game consoles. The more devices connected to your internet connection, the more overall speed you need to support them.
You may need gigabit internet service if you:
- Use multiple devices at once without sacrificing speed.
- Stream movies, download videos and upload photos with virtually no buffering or waiting.
- Play games online knowing you have the fastest Internet speed available.
- Work from home with the greatest efficiency and reliability you can get from a home Internet connection.
- All of this, at the same time, on the same Internet connection.
