My local hero is not just any hero, she's my sister, Linda. Ever since she was little, she was always the work horse wanting to help everyone. It's no wonder that she chose to go into the nursing field. She's just a hard worker and rarely takes the time for herself. This year was supposed to be her wedding year but she decided to postpone it in order to work additional shifts at the hospital and help COVID-19 patients recover. I'd love to gift her with this!

I am nominating Mugabe for all of his hard work he has given and continues to give to his community as well as other communities. He is a truck driver who wakes up at 12am to work 12-14 hours daily, devoting his generosity and care to his work. Making sure his customer's shelves are stocked with our everyday essentials. I admire his hard work and dedication. Please help me recognize this gentleman and hero!

My hero is Brittany, a critical team unit Paramedic. Many times she talks about how she held a patient's hand, talked to them or simply just listened to them during their most critical moments to provide comfort. She is dedicated, passionate and committed to help narrow health disparities and often talks about her desire to contribute to the Latino community in a significant way through education, prevention and treatment. Her passion is to promote healthier lifestyles in underserved Latino communities. She strongly believes that every patient should have access to quality healthcare. As a Latina she believes that we are underrepresented in healthcare professions and this month she is applying to medical school. This hero is my daughter.

Martin didn't stop caring and connecting with the 80+youth & families (he helps) when COVID19 isolation occurred. Tirelessly connecting with youth by text, Instagram, zoom, and, when necessary, connecting in person when concerned about the mental health crisis. Within 2 days of isolation, one teen cheerleader died from suicide. Though she was not a member of his group, several students were significantly affected. Knowing he had to do something quickly, he opened his home to 3 male youth to help them deal with immediate issues. This is just one of many things Marty does for the well-being of others. He and his sister founded his after-school youth program ten years ago, after the loss of his niece to suicide.

Sayo is an amazing doctor who is so invested in the overall health of her patients. Working in the largest hospital system in the country, she has been front and center of the pandemic as it blew up out of control here in NYC. Nevertheless, she has persevered and continued to serve her patients. Even after getting the virus, and beating it, she went right back to work in the COVID center point and continues to do all she can to help her community get back to full health. She is definitely a hero, and is a definition of a selfless worker for health and wellness.

Eric is a FDNY paramedic working in Brooklyn. Due to the nature of his job, he could be exposed to the coronavirus before anybody could. Since the pandemic struck us, he's been handling calls and patients related to coronavirus. Long hours and minimum breaks are just everyday life. But he was trying to hold up for the sake of the city. A few weeks ago, he tested positive for COVID-19, as expected because he's been working overtime nonstop, which has significantly increased his exposure to the virus. He went right back to work after he felt better, supporting the city as much as he could. He's been staying away from his family since it all began. He hasn't met them in close to two months. He's definitely sacrificed a lot for others and for the city. He is my hero!

In this time of crisis in New York, while we were asked to stay home, Jody rode the subways to work in the post office delivering mail until it was not safe to ride the trains any longer. He then drove to work and still could not find places to park because no one was moving their cars. Afraid but determined, he has not missed one day of work. Because of his perseverence, the mail will get through. Medications, stimulus checks and letters from loved ones all got delivered. He is a hero. All his neighbors and the wonderful people on his route thank him.

I would like to nominate my wife, Rebecca, as an Everyday Hero. Prior to COVID-19, she was a nurse in the Anesthesia Care Unit at her hospital. With the number of COVID patients increasing, the hospital needed to prepare for the worst case, so they began training nurses to help in Intensive Care Units, in order to care for the COVID patients. Rebecca previously worked in the ICU and volunteered to temporarily shift to this unit, knowing full well she would be exposed to the virus every shift. This meant a shift in work schedule and environment that brought on much more intense shifts and stress. Everyday when she gets home from her exhausting work shifts, she comes home and continues caring for people, as she helps care for our two young children. This allows me to work a couple of extra hours for my job. Then, after the children are in bed, she starts to study or complete her assignments for her Master's degree classes that she was pursuing prior to COVID-19. She does all of this, while still helping to complete her fair share of house work and chores. I want to thank her greatly and tell her how much I appreciate her efforts during this season!
