If I use my own modem, what should I be aware of?

At certain times, we may provide automatic speed upgrades. If your modem is not capable of delivering the upgraded speeds, you will need to buy a new modem to receive those speeds. If you wish to use your own equipment, please see our minimum recommendations and also check your manufacturer’s website for technical specifications. Please note that while some manufacturers indicate they support a specific range of internet speeds, we strongly recommend certain specifications in order to receive optimal Wave internet speeds and ensure compatibility.

As technology evolves, and network improvements are made, the above recommendations could change at any time. We may not always be able to notify you in advance of changes to these requirements, and we reserve the right to update these requirements as needed.

I have my own modem, but it does not offer the recommended channels you state above. Can I still use it?

If your modem does not meet the above recommendations, it will not deliver optimal Wave Internet speeds. You can still use it, but you may be sacrificing speed and performance. Please see the recommended minimum requirements in the chart above.

Can I use my own modem for Gig Speed service?

Yes, however we highly recommend that you use the Wave modem for Gig Speed service to ensure you get the fastest speed your devices can support.

There are two DOCSIS 3.1, 32-channel modems certified for use on Wave network. These include:

  • Arris SB8200
  • Netgear CM1000

Reminder: Internet download speeds may vary and are not guaranteed. Observed speeds may vary by customer based on device, connection, & other factors outside of Wave’s control.

Where can I purchase a Wave approved modem?

At a local computer/electronics store or online retailer.

I am a current Internet customer. How do I switch to using my own modem instead of using a Wave modem?

Purchase a modem from a retailer. Once you properly connect your new modem to the coax cable in your home, contact a Wave support representative at 1-866-WAVE-123 (1-866-928-3123) and let us know the MAC address from the new modem. You must return your Wave cable modem to your closest Wave retail store to avoid monthly rental charges. If you are unable to install the modem yourself and require a service call, you will be charged a fee to have a technician professionally install it. Charges would also apply if you need a technician to come pick up the old modem from your home.

Can I use my own modem with Enhanced Whole Home Wifi (powered by eero)?

Yes! But it must not be WiFi-enabled. You can either: 1) purchase a stand-alone modem with no built in router (see requirements by service tier below), OR 2) you can put the modem in bridge mode (turning off the wireless capability) prior to your eero installation.

Can I use my own modem if I have phone service with Wave?

Yes. You can still use your own modem if you have Wave phone service; however, you will still need a Wave EMTA (Embedded Multimedia Terminal Adapter) to use Wave phone service in addition to your own compatible modem.

Are there any restrictions for using my modem?

Digital Phone customers must use an Wave EMTA for their phone service. The Wave EMTA can be used with a customer-owned modem.

If I no longer want to use my own modem, how do I get a Wave modem?

You may pick up a modem at a local Wave office or request a professional technician installation for $60.00.

Can I hook up my own purchased modem instead of paying a fee to have an Wave technician come to my home?

Yes. Connect your new modem to the coax cable in your home, and then contact a Wave support representative at 1-866-WAVE-123 (1-866-928-3123) and let us know the MAC address from the new modem. You must return your Wave cable modem to your closest local retail store to avoid monthly rental charges.

Will Wave sell the Wave-owned modem to me?

At this time, Wave does not sell modems.

Are there any restrictions?

Yes. You are not able to use your own modem in these scenarios:

· Digital Phone customers must use a Wave EMTA for their phone service. The Wave EMTA can be provisioned to provide internet service as well.
· Customers who reside in a Wave fiber-to-the-home area must use a Wave internet device (ONT).
